Anuradhapura

Description

Anuradhapura stands as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and the cradle of ancient Sri Lankan civilization. As the first capital of Sri Lanka (from the 4th century BCE to the 11th century CE), it was a majestic kingdom famed for its advanced irrigation systems, monumental architecture, and spiritual depth.

The city is home to the revered Atamasthana  eight sacred Buddhist sites believed to have been visited by the Buddha or connected to his relics. Among them are Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi (a sapling of the original Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment), Ruwanwelisaya, Abhayagiri Stupa, and Thuparamaya, the island’s first dagoba. Pilgrims flock year-round to witness and worship these marvels steeped in devotion and legend.

Anuradhapura also showcases Sri Lanka’s ancient hydraulic engineering with vast reservoirs such as Tissa Wewa, Nuwara Wewa, and the impressive Kala Wewa, built to sustain both agriculture and life in the arid region. Today, Anuradhapura is a UNESCO World Heritage Site  a tranquil landscape of giant stupas, monastic ruins, stone carvings, and serene lotus ponds, seamlessly blending history and spirituality.
