Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu National Park, located on Sri Lanka’s northwestern coast, is the country’s largest and one of its oldest protected areas, spanning more than 130,000 hectares. Its name derives from the countless “villus”  natural rain-fed lakes scattered throughout the forest  that attract herds of animals and flocks of birds during the dry months. Unlike the more open terrain of other parks, Wilpattu’s charm lies in its mysterious, jungle-clad landscapes, where dense thickets suddenly open into lakes and grasslands. This setting offers a true sense of wilderness and anticipation on safari drives.

The park is especially renowned as a stronghold for the Sri Lankan leopard, giving visitors one of the best chances to spot this elusive predator in its natural habitat. It is also home to Asian elephants, sloth bears, water buffalo, spotted and sambar deer, wild boar, crocodiles, and a dazzling variety of birdlife including painted storks, white ibis, and eagles. Wildlife sightings here often feel more rewarding due to the park’s quieter, less crowded atmosphere compared to southern reserves.

For nature lovers and photographers, Wilpattu is a treasure trove of biodiversity wrapped in tranquility. Its combination of vast size, unique landscapes, and
thriving ecosystems make it a must-visit for those seeking an authentic Sri Lankan wilderness experience.
